Siren’s are these evil beings from Greek Mythology, that lure sailors with their beautiful voices and drown them in the sea. But to me, Sirens were more than some tall tale, they represented the idea of toxic relationships.
When I wrote the poetry for this piece, I made sure that the Siren (the singer) never says ‘I love you’ or ‘I care about you’, and that all the Siren would say is full of lies and empty promises. But despite all that, the sailor (the listener) can’t help but to be drawn to the trance and the music of the Siren.
I used the piano to symbolize the waves with the ceaseless arpeggios, and I utilized strumming the piano strings by hand to symbolize the deep, dark ocean. The singer begins with singing diatonically, but as the piece progresses, she shifts into more disjunct and atonal melodies as a way to show how the Siren’s ugly truth slowly comes to light.

Text:
Come my sailor
Hear my silken voice
As I sing my song for you
come to me, like you have a choice
So tall and handsome are you
Lock your blue eyes in my trance
See our family together
Look at out future together
As we wade through the waves
in this deadly dance
Oh, I want your eyes
I want your hair
I want your skin
I want your mouth
and your tongue
and your lips
So place them on me now
And seal our lust with a kiss,
The kiss of death
But I don’t really want you
all that I’ve said was untrue
So plunge forever
In the eternal grey hue
